Statement on the Special City Council Meeting

Elizabeth City, NC- “After much consideration and personal soul searching I concluded that it would be irresponsible for Council to spend thousands of dollars on an investigation when hundreds of our citizens are suffering financially and can barely afford to pay their utility bills. When I ran for office my campaign slogan was, “It’s Worth the Fight.” Essentially what I was saying was that the future of Elizabeth City is worth the fight, but recklessly spending thousands of tax payers’ money is not worth the fight. Everyone knows full well that all the facts showed that the Mayor and the Manager could have been more forthcoming in so far as the charter school and grant application was concerned. Especially, considering the fact that it was highly controversial from the very beginning. Nevertheless, Councilman Horton and I did not call the special meeting to reprimand or chastise the Mayor and Manager. We called the meeting because we wanted to move beyond the chaos, work with our colleagues, and tackle the real issues facing all the citizens of Elizabeth City. This was especially important to us going into the Retreat and Planning Session. The people of our great city are tired of politics as usual, but this Council insists on spending the people’s money just to prove a point and clear two names, shame on them. Despite Council’s decision to continue the investigation I will continue to stand firm against it, and I will continue to represent the Fourth Ward to the very best of my ability. I hope my fellow colleagues will put their egos aside so that we can collectively move the city forward.”
