Becton Takes Helm of ECSU
Monday, July 1, 2013 was the first day on the job for newly appointed Elizabeth City State University interim Chancellor Charles Becton. A retired judge, Becton's last assignment was interim chancellor of North Carolina Central University. Becton was appointed by President Tom Ross of the UNC System last month. Becton fills the position previously held by Dr. Willie Gilchrist before he announced his resignation last month amid an ongoing SBI investigation into allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation at ECSU. The campus has been at the center of controversy the past three months surrounding campus shootings during Viking Fest, sexual assault allegations and over 120 criminal complaints that were not properly solved, investigated or reported. Becton pledges to continue to improve the overall safety of the campus and will work on improving the sharp decline in enrollment. "There is still time to savage this year" he said referring to enrollment. For most returning students safety is an important issue however other issues such as: more transparency, better food in the cafe, better services, and prompt distribution of refund checks are all key issues that they hope to have addressed and solved. When classes resume in August for the 2013-2014 academic year, it would not be a bad idea for Chancellor Becton to hold a Town Hall style meet and greet/question and answer session utilizing social media with returning students. ECSU has a lot of work to do, however as a current student of this great institution of higher learning I have full faith that it will continue to "Elevate Higher, and Emerge Stronger" and accomplish its mission.Viking Pride!!!
