King Runs for 4th Ward City Councilor

Montravias D. King, a 22 year old senior political science major at Elizabeth City State University filed for one of two seats in the already highly contested fourth ward city council race around 10:15 AM  today. The deadline to file in North Carolina for the 2013 municipal elections are officially closed as of 12:00 PM today. Montravias hopes to become the first student at ECSU to become a member of city council. However, Montravias realizes and understands that as a representative for the fourth ward, he is serving all of the citizens, not just the students. That's why since last week he has been out and about introducing himself to the people in the nieborhoods surrounding the university. Montravias hopes to address several key issues that specifically concern the the residents of the fourth ward. I write today with immense sadness upon notification of the passing of the Honorable Virginia Simmons Tillett, a trailblazer in Eastern North Carolina politics. She served Dare County for over thirty years with pride and distinction. However, Ms. Tillet was much more than just an elected official. She was an educator, historian, mother, grandmother, friend, and mentor to many (including myself). Ms. Tillett revived the history of the Freedmen of Roanoke Colony, AKA "The other lost colony." She worked tirelessly to educate people and raise awareness about the significance of black history in Manteo (Dare County).  I met Ms. Tillett in 2014 while serving on the Elizabeth City, City Council and Secretary of the Eastern North Carolina Civic Group. Becton Takes Helm of ECSU

Monday, July 1, 2013 was the first day on the job for newly appointed Elizabeth City State University interim Chancellor Charles Becton. A retired judge, Becton's last assignment was interim chancellor of North Carolina Central University. Becton was appointed by President Tom Ross of the UNC System last month. Becton fills the position previously held by Dr. Willie Gilchrist before he announced his resignation last month amid an ongoing SBI investigation into allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation at ECSU. The campus has been at the center of controversy the past three months surrounding campus shootings during Viking Fest, sexual assault allegations and over 120 criminal complaints that were not properly solved, investigated or reported. Becton pledges to continue to improve the overall safety of the campus and will work on improving the sharp decline in enrollment.
