Veterans Day Statement

Elizabeth City, NC- As we mark Veterans Day, let us remember the sacrifices of our local heroes who have served our nation with honor, but let us also remember their present day struggles. Many veterans are homeless and unemployed. Recent veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts are facing double digit unemployment. What a shame given the fact that they have given so much to insure the freedom of this country. On this Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to keep a sacred trust with all who have worn the uniform of the United States of America: that America will serve you as well as you have served your country. May God bless our veterans, and may God bless the United States of America.

I write today with immense sadness upon notification of the passing of the Honorable Virginia Simmons Tillett, a trailblazer in Eastern North Carolina politics. She served Dare County for over thirty years with pride and distinction. However, Ms. Tillet was much more than just an elected official. She was an educator, historian, mother, grandmother, friend, and mentor to many (including myself). Ms. Tillett revived the history of the Freedmen of Roanoke Colony, AKA "The other lost colony." She worked tirelessly to educate people and raise awareness about the significance of black history in Manteo (Dare County).  I met Ms. Tillett in 2014 while serving on the Elizabeth City, City Council and Secretary of the Eastern North Carolina Civic Group. She made a positive impression on me, and I often sought her advice and nuggets of wisdom. Becton Takes Helm of ECSU

Monday, July 1, 2013 was the first day on the job for newly appointed Elizabeth City State University interim Chancellor Charles Becton. A retired judge, Becton's last assignment was interim chancellor of North Carolina Central University. Becton was appointed by President Tom Ross of the UNC System last month. Becton fills the position previously held by Dr. Willie Gilchrist before he announced his resignation last month amid an ongoing SBI investigation into allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation at ECSU. The campus has been at the center of controversy the past three months surrounding campus shootings during Viking Fest, sexual assault allegations and over 120 criminal complaints that were not properly solved, investigated or reported. Becton pledges to continue to improve the overall safety of the campus and will work on improving the sharp decline in enrollment. Statement on the Passing of Mama Winnie Mandela                                            Dear Friend, Earlier this morning the world lost a true freedom fighter. Winnie Madikizela Mandela, former wife of Nelson Mandela, passed away at the age of 81. “Mother Winnie” as she was affectionately called, continued the South African struggle for liberation, while Nelson Mandela (first black President of South Africa) was imprisoned on Robben Island.  Mother Winnie was beaten, jailed, separated from her children, and tortured under the Apartheid Regime (white minority rule).  Watch the motion picture starring Jennifer Hudson;  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edMHVGaRPfQ    to give you an idea of what she went through, not just for the people of South Africa but for liberation movements across the world.  When I think ab...
