ECSU will continue to “elevate higher and emerge stronger”

Image
With a direct economic impact of over $130 million dollars, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is an economic powerhouse to Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County and the entire north eastern North Carolina region. The U.S. News and World Report's 2014 Edition of Best Colleges ranked ECSU #1 in the Top Public Schools Regional Colleges (South) category and #20 among the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.   Under the administration of Dr. Willie J. Gilchrist, ECSU saw the highest enrollment in its history. These are just a few of many successful milestones that we have seen in recent years. However, they are often swept under the rug by the media, and others who constantly seek to tarnish the image of our illustrious university. Instead of embracing our university some constantly seek reasons to justify why they cannot accept ECSU for what it is truly worth. The old adage is true, that you are often more respected outside of your own hometown.  Since ...

Young black males:Intervention needed before it's too late

Image
Yesterday evening, I attended a  college fair at my former high school with the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) admissions department. Everything went extremely well. I spoke with at least ten students about ECSU, and the opportunities that it has afforded me. It felt really good to go back to my former high school and walk the halls that I walked four years ago. I reminisced on my days as a student leader at Greene Central from 2005-2009. I vividly remember Friday night football games, afternoon announcements, and scurrying to class when the first bell ringed. After the event was over, I pondered to myself and realized that something was missing. There was something about the college fair that felt void, but I just couldn't figure out what it was until it hit me like the light bulb came on. I realized that there were no black males at the college fair. I could not remember seeing or speaking with any black males during the entire two hour fair. It was totally appalling and ...

Campaign Statement on BOE Decision

Image
08.15.13 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Pasquotank BOE decision provides framework to disenfranchise student voters On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, the Republican-controlled Pasquotank County Board of Election (BOE) attempt to block Mr. Montravias D. King from running for city council in Elizabeth City provides the legal basis to deny any and all students living at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) the right vote in local elections and, consequently, the right to run for office in Elizabeth City. Ultimately, their action is a direct violation of the US Supreme Court decision in Symm vs. United States (1979), which upheld student’s rights to vote in the town and cities where they attend school. The decision by the Pasquotank County BOE is a dangerous contradiction, blatant defiance of the law(s) that govern our great nation, and may lay the framework to disenfranchise students living at ECSU by denying them the right to vote in future local elections. This action is a just a ...
